Solar Panel Repairs & Maintenance

Solar panels are low maintenance, not no maintenance. Inverters fail, connectors corrode, pigeons move in and output drops so gradually that nobody notices until the bills creep up. And if the company that fitted your system has since closed down, it can be hard to know who to call.

Signs your solar system needs attention

  • The inverter display shows an error code, a red light or nothing at all
  • Your monitoring app has stopped updating or shows zero generation on a sunny day
  • Generation is noticeably lower than the same month last year
  • The DC or AC isolator has tripped, or won't stay on
  • Birds are nesting under the panels, with noise, droppings or debris on the roof
  • Visible damage: cracked glass, loose panels or cables hanging from the array
  • A burning smell or scorch marks near the inverter or isolators

If you notice burning or scorching, switch the system off at the isolators if it's safe to do so, and call us.

Solar repairs we carry out

Inverter faults

The inverter is the part most likely to fail during a system's life. We diagnose error codes, check whether the fault is the inverter itself or something feeding it, and repair or replace it. A replacement is also a chance to fit a hybrid inverter, ready for a battery.

DC cable and connector faults

Connectors on the roof are exposed to weather for years. Corrosion, poor original crimping or rodent damage can cause earth faults that shut the system down. We test the DC strings to find the faulty section.

Isolator problems

Rooftop and inverter isolators can let in water or fail internally. We replace them with suitable rated units.

Monitoring drop-outs

Often the panels are fine but the Wi-Fi connection or monitoring dongle has stopped working, so you can't see what's happening. We get it reporting again.

Bird proofing

Pigeons nesting under panels damage cables and leave a mess. We clear out nests and debris and fit mesh around the array edges to keep them out.

Routine solar maintenance

A maintenance visit catches problems before they cost you generation. It typically includes:

  • A visual inspection of panels, mounting, cables and roof penetrations
  • Inverter checks, including error logs and firmware
  • Electrical testing of the DC strings and AC connection
  • Isolator and connection checks
  • A review of shading changes, such as trees that have grown since installation
  • Advice on cleaning where dirt or lichen is reducing output

For businesses, regular maintenance also gives you inspection records for insurers and your asset register. See commercial solar PV installation.

Took over a system you didn't install?

Bought a house with panels already on the roof? It's common to have no paperwork and no idea how the system has been performing. We can inspect and test it, tell you what condition it's in and explain how to read the inverter and monitoring, so you know where you stand.

Thinking about a battery?

If your inverter needs replacing, it may be the right time to add storage. See solar battery storage.
