Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

There's no law that says every appliance must be PAT tested on a fixed date. What the law does say, under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Health and Safety at Work Act, is that electrical equipment must be maintained so it's safe.

Regular inspection and testing is the most practical way to show you've done that. It's also what insurers, landlords and auditors expect to see when they ask for your records.

How often should appliances be tested?

It depends on the type of equipment and where it's used. The IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment recommends a risk-based approach. In general:

  • Construction sites: frequent checks, often every three months for 110V equipment
  • Industrial and commercial kitchens: more frequent than offices, because equipment works harder
  • Offices, shops and hotels: longer intervals for low-risk items such as IT equipment
  • Rented properties: usually at the start of each tenancy for any appliances you supply

We'll recommend a sensible testing interval for each category of equipment, so you're not paying to test things more often than you need to.

What PAT testing involves

Every item gets a formal visual inspection first. Our engineer checks the plug, fuse rating, cable, casing and any signs of overheating or damage. Most faults are actually found at this stage.

Class I and Class II items then go through the relevant electrical tests, which can include earth continuity, insulation resistance and a protective conductor or touch current check.

Each appliance is labelled with a pass or fail sticker and logged on an asset register showing its location, test results and the date of its next test. Failed items are taken out of use and you're told why, so you can decide whether to repair or replace them.

Testing without interrupting your work

Testing each item takes only a few minutes, and our engineer works around your staff, desk by desk or room by room. For busy offices, kitchens and shops, we can test early in the morning, in the evening or at weekends.

Simple repairs, such as replacing a damaged plug or the wrong fuse, can often be done on the spot, which reduces the number of items you have to take out of service.

Combine PAT testing with fixed wire testing

Your building's fixed wiring needs testing too, on a longer cycle. Booking both together means one visit, one point of contact and a complete set of records. See commercial EICR and fixed wire testing. Landlords can also add PAT testing to a landlord EICR.

Why businesses choose ICE Electrical for PAT testing

  • Testing to the IET Code of Practice by engineers from a NICEIC-approved contractor
  • Clear labels on every appliance and a full digital asset register
  • Out-of-hours testing for kitchens, shops and busy offices
  • Minor repairs carried out on the day where possible
  • Reminders when the next round of testing is due
