Industrial Lighting

Poor lighting in a warehouse or factory isn't just uncomfortable. It slows picking, increases errors and contributes to accidents. Old metal halide and sodium high-bays also use far more energy than modern LED, take time to warm up and fail at the worst moments.

Our industrial lighting treatment process

Step 1 Contact

Step 1 Contact

Tell us about the building, racking layout and any problem areas. We survey ceiling heights, existing fittings, tasks and current light levels.

Step 2 The Quote

Step 2 The Quote

You receive a fixed quotation with the proposed fittings, layout and controls, plus the installation programme and any areas that need to be closed off.

Step 3 The Works

Step 3 The Works

Trained operatives install the new lighting from MEWPs, working zone by zone so aisles and production stay open, and dispose of old fittings responsibly.

Step 4 After care

Step 4 After care

We commission the controls, test the circuits and emergency lighting, and hand over certification and a record of the new lighting layout.

Industrial lighting we install

  • High-bay and low-bay LED fittings for warehouses and production areas
  • Aisle and racking lighting designed for narrow aisles and high bays
  • Loading bay, yard and external perimeter lighting
  • Emergency lighting for escape routes, aisles and high-risk task areas
  • Lighting controls, including presence detection, daylight dimming and zoning
  • Lighting for cold stores and harsh environments, with suitably rated fittings

Lighting designed for the task

Different areas need different light. A picking aisle, an assembly bench and a goods-in area all have different requirements, and guidance from CIBSE and the Society of Light and Lighting sets out recommended illuminance levels for each type of task.

We look at your racking layout, ceiling height, the tasks carried out in each area and any existing problems such as dark aisles or glare. Fittings and spacing are chosen to give even light where people actually work, rather than simply replacing old fittings one for one.

Cutting energy use with LED and controls

Switching from older high-bay fittings to LED typically reduces lighting energy use considerably, and controls can reduce it further. In a warehouse, many aisles sit empty for much of the shift. Presence detection lets lights dim or switch off when nobody is there and come back to full output instantly, something older discharge lamps couldn't do.

Daylight sensors near rooflights and loading doors reduce output when natural light is available. Zoning lets you light only the parts of the building in use on quieter shifts. We'll explain the options and help you decide which make sense for your site. For office and retail buildings, see our commercial LED lighting upgrades.

Installing at height, around your operation

Most industrial lighting is fitted well above floor level, often over racking, live aisles or production lines. Our trained operatives use MEWPs and work in agreed zones, closing off one area at a time so the rest of the building can carry on as normal. Work can be scheduled out of hours or over weekends where daytime access isn't practical.

Old fittings and lamps are removed and disposed of in line with the WEEE Regulations.

Emergency lighting that keeps up

When lighting layouts change, emergency lighting often gets left behind. New racking, mezzanines and partitions can leave escape routes without adequate cover. As part of any lighting project, we check emergency lighting against BS 5266-1 and the current layout. See emergency lighting for testing and certification.

Why ICE Electrical for industrial lighting

  • LED and controls specified to cut energy use without leaving people in the dark
  • Safe working at height by trained MEWP operatives
  • Phased installation that keeps aisles and production running
  • Emergency lighting checked as part of the project, not as an afterthought
