Thermographic (Thermal Imaging) Electrical Surveys
Most electrical failures in commercial buildings give off a warning first: heat. A loose busbar connection, an overloaded cable or a failing breaker will run hotter than everything around it, often for months before it fails.
Spot the heat before the failure
A thermographic survey finds that heat. Using a calibrated thermal imaging camera, our engineers scan your distribution boards and switchgear while they're running at normal load, with no shutdown and no disruption to your business.

Our thermal imaging surveys treatment process
Step 1 Contact
Tell us about your site, the distribution boards and switchgear you'd like surveyed, and whether your insurer has asked for a thermographic survey.
Step 2 The Quote
We send a fixed quote based on the number of boards and items of equipment. Remedial work found during the survey is priced separately.
Step 3 The Works
Our engineer scans each board and piece of switchgear under normal load, with no shutdown, recording thermal and visual images of any hot spots.
Step 4 After care
You receive a prioritised report with paired images, temperatures and recommended actions. Critical findings are reported to you on the day.

What a thermal imaging survey can find
- Loose or corroded connections in distribution boards and switchgear
- Overloaded circuits and cables running above their rating
- Failing circuit breakers, fuses and isolators
- Unbalanced loads across three-phase supplies
- Overheating terminations on motors, contactors and plant
- Hot spots in busbar systems and rising mains
Many of these faults can't be found by a visual check or a standard test with the power off, because the problem only shows up when current is flowing.
Why businesses use thermography
Prevent unplanned downtime. A failed switchboard can take a whole building or production line offline. Finding the fault first means the repair can be planned for a quiet period.
Reduce fire risk. Overheating connections are a common cause of electrical fires. Thermography finds them while they're still a maintenance job.
Satisfy your insurer. Many commercial insurers recommend or require annual thermographic surveys of electrical distribution equipment, particularly for industrial sites, warehouses and data rooms.
Make maintenance smarter. Instead of tightening every connection on a fixed schedule, you can focus effort on the components that actually need it.
How the survey works
Thermography has to be done under load, so we survey while your building is operating normally. Our engineer opens covers safely, scans each board and piece of switchgear, and records thermal and visual images of anything above its expected temperature.
Every hot spot is measured and ranked by severity, from minor (monitor at the next survey) to critical (repair as soon as possible). Where we find a critical fault, we'll tell you on the day rather than waiting for the report. If it's safe to do so, we can often carry out a temporary fix or reduce the load on that circuit until the permanent repair is booked in.
Your thermographic report
You'll receive a report showing each item surveyed, with thermal and standard photographs side by side, the temperatures recorded, the likely cause and a recommended action. Findings are prioritised, so you know exactly what to deal with first.
We can quote for the remedial work and re-scan afterwards to confirm the problem is solved. Thermography also fits neatly alongside commercial EICR and fixed wire testing and a planned maintenance contract. For factories and plant rooms, see our industrial electrical services.
Why facilities and engineering teams choose ICE Electrical for thermography
- No shutdown needed: surveys carried out with your systems running normally
- Engineers from a NICEIC-approved contractor who understand what they're looking at, not just camera operators
- Critical findings reported on the day
- Prioritised reports with paired thermal and visual images
- Remedial work and follow-up scans from the same team
