Common EV charger faults we fix
- Charger won't start a session, or stops partway through
- The RCD or circuit breaker trips when charging begins
- Error lights or fault codes on the charger display
- Offline in the app, so scheduling and smart tariffs stop working
- Damaged charging cable or a worn connector that no longer locks
- Water ingress through a damaged housing or poorly sealed cable entry
- Slow charging that's well below what the charger should deliver
Finding the real cause
Some charger faults are inside the unit. Plenty aren't. A charger that trips the consumer unit might have an internal fault, but it might equally be a damaged supply cable, water in a junction box, or the wrong type of RCD protecting the circuit.
Our engineers test the supply circuit as well as the charger. We check the protective devices, including the RCD and the charger's own DC leakage protection, measure earth fault loop impedance, and confirm the earthing arrangement is correct for an EV installation under BS 7671 Section 722. That way we fix the actual problem, not just reset it.
Connectivity and app problems
A smart charger that loses its Wi-Fi or mobile signal can't follow your charging schedule. That can mean charging at peak rates, or not at all. We check signal strength at the charger, reconnect it to your network, update settings and, where the signal is simply too weak, recommend a fix such as a wired connection or signal booster.
Some faults need the manufacturer's input, such as firmware or a replacement part under warranty. Where that's the case, we'll tell you and help you through the process.
Servicing that keeps chargers reliable
Chargers sit outside in all weather and get handled every day. A periodic service catches problems before they stop you charging.
A service includes:
- Visual inspection of the unit, cable, connector and mounting
- Checking seals and cable glands for water ingress
- Testing RCD and DC leakage protection
- Insulation resistance and earth continuity testing on the supply circuit
- Checking terminations for heat damage or loosening
- Confirming the app, schedule and firmware are working as they should
For businesses with multiple charge points, servicing can be scheduled as part of a planned maintenance contract, so every bay stays in service.
Is it the charger or the electrics?
If your charger keeps tripping the main RCD, or other circuits are affected too, the fault may be elsewhere in your installation. Our fault finding service covers the wider electrics. If your charger was fitted without the supply and earthing checks it needed, we'll tell you what's missing and how to put it right. See home EV charger installation.
