Lighting Installation

Good lighting changes how a room feels more than almost anything else. A kitchen that's bright where you chop and soft where you eat. A living room you can dim for a film. A hallway that isn't a dark tunnel at six in the evening in November.

FAQs

Pricing & Payment

How do you price a lighting installation?

We price by the number and type of fittings, whether new circuits or switching are needed, and how easy it is to reach the cable routes. You'll get a fixed price once we know the layout and fittings. If you're still choosing fittings, we can price a few options so you can compare.

Booking & Response Times

Can you fit lights I've already bought?

Yes, as long as they're suitable for the location. We'll check the IP rating for bathrooms, whether downlights are fire-rated where needed and whether your fittings work with the dimmers you want. If a fitting isn't suitable, we'll explain why before it goes up.

The Work Itself

Will my LED lights work with a dimmer switch?

Only if both the lamp or fitting and the dimmer are compatible. Mismatched LEDs and dimmers can flicker or buzz. We'll check compatibility before fitting and recommend dimmers designed for LED loads. Compatible pairings dim smoothly from full brightness down to a low glow.

What colour temperature should I choose for my lights?

Warm white (around 2700K to 3000K) suits living rooms and bedrooms. A cooler white (around 4000K) works well in kitchens, utility rooms and home offices where you need to see detail. Some fittings let you switch between the two. Keeping the same colour temperature within one room avoids a patchy look.

How many downlights do I need in a room?

It depends on the room's size, ceiling height and the beam angle of the fittings. As a rough guide, kitchens need more light than living rooms. We'll suggest a layout that lights the space evenly without overdoing it. We'll also look at where you'll stand and work, so light falls where you need it.

Regulations & Compliance

What lights can go in a bathroom?

Bathrooms are split into zones based on distance from the bath or shower. Lights close to water need a higher IP rating, usually IP65, and switching is kept outside the room or on a pull cord. We follow these rules for every fitting.

Do downlights need to be fire-rated?

Fire-rated downlights are often needed where the ceiling separates two floors, to maintain the ceiling's fire resistance. We check what's above the ceiling and fit the correct type for each location. We also check loft insulation so it's kept clear of fittings or covered with the correct hoods.

Certificates & Paperwork

Do I get a certificate for new lighting?

Yes. Adding lights to an existing circuit is recorded on a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. A new lighting circuit is recorded on an Electrical Installation Certificate and, where it's notifiable, building control is informed. You'll receive your certificate by email once the job is complete.

Guarantees & Aftercare

Can I add more lighting later?

Yes. If you think you might want wall lights or extra downlights in future, tell us during the installation and we can leave a cable in place, which makes adding them later quicker and less disruptive. A capped cable in the right place costs very little at the time and saves cutting into finished ceilings later.

What happens if one of my new downlights stops working?

Let us know. LED downlights rarely fail early, but if one does, we'll check whether it's the fitting, the driver or the connection and put it right. Faults with fittings you supplied are covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Keep the box or receipt for any fittings you bought yourself.

Planning the light in each room

The best results come from thinking about how you use a room before choosing fittings. We'll usually suggest three layers:

General lighting to fill the room, often downlights or a central fitting.

Task lighting where you need to see clearly, such as above the hob, worktops, a desk or a dressing table.

Accent lighting to make the room feel finished: wall lights, strip lighting under units or a lamp circuit you can switch from the door.

We'll also help with practical choices: colour temperature (warm white for living spaces, a cooler white for kitchens and utility rooms), beam angles for downlights, and whether your chosen fittings work with a dimmer.

Downlights done properly

Downlights look simple but are easy to get wrong. Cutting holes in a ceiling below a bathroom or loft needs care. Fire-rated downlights are often needed to maintain the fire resistance of a ceiling between floors, and insulation in a loft must be kept clear or covered with the correct hoods. We'll check what's above the ceiling before we cut, and choose fittings that are right for the location.

Bathrooms and kitchens

Bathroom lighting must be rated for the zone it sits in. Anything near the bath or shower needs a higher IP rating to keep water out, and switching is usually kept outside the room or on a pull cord. Kitchen lighting often involves new circuits or extending existing ones, which we test and certify.

If you're having a bathroom fitted, we're happy to work alongside your fitter so the wiring is in before the tiles go on. The same goes for our electric shower installation service.

Smart and outdoor lighting
