Solar Battery Storage

Solar panels do most of their work in the middle of the day, when many homes are empty. Without a battery, much of that electricity goes straight back to the grid. Then, in the evening, when the kettle goes on and the oven heats up, you're buying power again.

Use more of the power you generate

A home battery closes that gap. It stores the surplus your panels make during the day so you can use it after the sun goes down. ICE Electrical installs solar batteries across London and the South East, either alongside new panels or added to a system you already have.

How a solar battery works

During the day, your panels power the house first. Anything left over charges the battery instead of being exported. When generation drops in the evening, the battery takes over, running your lights, appliances and cooking until it's empty or the sun comes back up.

Many batteries can also charge from the grid on a cheap overnight tariff. That's useful in winter, when your panels produce less, because you can fill the battery at off-peak rates and use that power during the more expensive daytime hours.

Do you need a battery?

A battery tends to make most sense if:

  • Your home is often empty during the day, so a lot of your solar is currently exported
  • You use plenty of electricity in the evening
  • You're on, or willing to switch to, a time-of-use tariff with cheaper overnight rates
  • You have an electric car or plan to get one

It may make less sense if someone's at home all day and already uses most of what the panels make. We'll look at your usage and tell you which camp you're in.

Adding a battery to existing solar panels

You don't need to replace your panels to add storage. There are two main ways to do it.

AC-coupled batteries have their own inverter and connect to your home's electrics separately from the solar system. They're usually the simplest way to retrofit storage to panels that have been on the roof for years.

DC-coupled batteries connect through a hybrid inverter shared with the panels. They're a neat option for new installations, or if your existing inverter is due for replacement anyway.

We'll check your current inverter, consumer unit and available space before recommending either route.

Where the battery goes

Batteries are typically fitted in a garage, utility room, under-stairs cupboard or on an outside wall. We'll look at the space, ventilation and cable route at the survey, and follow the manufacturer's installation requirements so the unit stays within its safe operating conditions.

Backup power during a power cut

Not every battery keeps your lights on in a power cut. Most systems shut down when the grid goes off, for safety. If backup is important to you, for example because you work from home or rely on a fridge-freezer for medication, ask us about systems with a backup or emergency power function. We'll explain which circuits it can cover and how it switches over.

Getting the most from your battery

Once installed, we'll set up the battery's app and show you how to adjust its charging settings. Small changes, such as timing overnight charging to your tariff, make a real difference. If you also have an electric car, we can advise on how the battery and home EV charger work together so one doesn't simply drain the other.

Why choose ICE Electrical for battery storage?

  • NICEIC-approved electricians who check your whole installation, not just the battery
  • Honest advice on whether a battery suits the way you use electricity
  • Retrofits to existing solar systems, whoever installed the panels
  • Neat, safe installation in line with the manufacturer's requirements
  • Network operator notification handled for you
