Smart Home Installation
Smart home technology is at its best when you stop noticing it. Lights that come on as you walk in from the car. Heating that knows when you're on your way home. A hallway that dims itself late at night so nobody's dazzled on the way to the bathroom. It only works like that when it's wired in properly.
A home that works around you
ICE Electrical installs smart lighting, switches, sockets and heating controls in homes across London and the South East. Our NICEIC-approved electricians make sure your devices are installed safely, connected reliably and set up so they're easy for the whole household to use.

FAQs
Pricing & Payment
What affects the cost of a smart home installation?
The number of devices, whether new wiring is needed, and the products you choose. Swapping a few switches costs far less than wiring a whole house for sensors and blinds. We'll recommend options that suit your budget and give you a fixed price.
Booking & Response Times
Can you install smart home wiring during a renovation?
Yes, and it's the best time. With walls and floors open, we can run cables for sensors, data points, blinds and hard-wired doorbells at first fix, so everything is hidden and reliable once you move back in. Tell us your plans before first fix so nothing is missed.
The Work Itself
Can you hard-wire a video doorbell?
Yes. A hard-wired doorbell runs from a low-voltage transformer, so you never have to recharge batteries. We find a safe route for the cable and fit the transformer in a suitable location, often near the consumer unit. Most installations are completed in a couple of hours.
Which smart home brands do you install?
We work with the major smart lighting, heating and doorbell brands and the main voice assistants. If you already use a particular system, we'll design around it so everything works from one app where possible. Tell us what you already use at the start.
Will smart switches work with my existing light fittings?
Usually, but some LED lamps don't dim smoothly with certain smart dimmers. We check the fittings and lamps you have and recommend switches and bulbs that work together without flickering. If a lamp isn't compatible, a simple bulb swap usually solves it, and we'll tell you which ones to buy.
Why does my smart switch need a neutral wire?
Many smart switches need constant power to stay connected to your Wi-Fi. That comes from a neutral wire at the switch. Lots of older UK homes don't have one, so we check before recommending a product. Where there's no neutral, we can suggest switches designed to work without one.
Regulations & Compliance
Is fitting smart switches and sockets regulated?
Yes. Replacing switches and sockets is electrical work that should be done safely and tested to BS 7671. New circuits are notifiable under Part P. Our NICEIC-approved electricians handle both and certify the work. A poorly fitted smart switch can overheat just like any other accessory.
Certificates & Paperwork
Do I get a certificate for smart home work?
Yes. Changes to existing circuits are recorded on a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. New circuits for smart systems are recorded on an Electrical Installation Certificate, with building control notified where required. You'll receive copies by email for your records, along with the test results for the circuits we've worked on.
Guarantees & Aftercare
What if a smart device stops connecting after installation?
Get in touch. Connection problems are often caused by Wi-Fi coverage or a software update rather than wiring. We'll help you work out the cause, and if it's related to our installation, we'll come back and put it right. A Wi-Fi access point in the right place often fixes patchy connections.
Will you set up the apps and show us how to use them?
Yes. Before we leave, we connect your devices to your network, set up the scenes and schedules you've asked for, and show everyone in the household how to use the app and physical controls. We'll also leave the product manuals and app login details with you.

The neutral wire question
Many smart light switches need a neutral wire at the switch to stay powered. In a lot of UK homes, especially older ones, lighting circuits were wired without a neutral at the switch. That's often why a smart switch bought online doesn't work, or flickers, once fitted.
Our electrician will check your existing wiring before recommending a product. If there's no neutral, we can suggest switches designed to work without one, or run new cable where it makes sense. Either way, you won't be left with devices that don't behave.
Plan it with your other electrical work
The easiest time to install smart home wiring is when walls and floors are already open. If you're having a rewire, extension or kitchen fitted, we can run cables to the right places at first fix, so you get hard-wired sensors, data points and blind motors with no visible trunking later.
Smart controls work particularly well with lighting installation projects. Planning your lighting circuits and scenes together gives you far more control than swapping switches afterwards.
Safe, certified and supported
Smart devices are still electrical work. Swapping a standard switch for a smart one, adding a powered doorbell or wiring a new heating control all need to be done safely, tested and recorded. You'll receive a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate, or an Electrical Installation Certificate for any new circuits.
Before we leave, we'll set up the app, connect devices to your network, create the scenes or schedules you've asked for, and show everyone in the household how to use them.
