The lights are out, the fridge has gone quiet and the Wi-Fi's down. Before you do anything else, take a breath. Most loss of power has a simple cause, and a few quick checks will tell you whether you need an electrician or the network operator.

First, check whether it's a power cut

Look outside. Are your neighbours' lights on? Are the street lights working?

If the whole street is dark, it's almost certainly a power cut on the local network. That isn't something an electrician can fix, and you shouldn't have to pay anyone to fix it. Call 105, the free national power cut number, to report it and get an update. In London and the South East, your call goes through to UK Power Networks.

If it's just your home, the problem is on your side of the meter, and that's where we come in.

Quick checks before you call us

1. Find your consumer unit (fuse box). It's usually under the stairs, in a hallway cupboard or in the garage.

2. Look at the main switch. If it's in the off position, switch it back on once.

3. Check the RCDs and circuit breakers. If any switch is down, push it back up once.

4. If it trips straight away, leave it off. Something on that circuit is faulty, and resetting it again and again can make things worse.

5. On a prepayment meter? Check you haven't run out of credit or emergency credit. It happens to everyone.

If none of that brings the power back, or something trips as soon as you reset it, call us.

Common reasons a home loses power

  • A faulty appliance tripping the RCD. Kettles, washing machines and immersion heaters are frequent culprits.
  • Water in a circuit, from a leak, a damp outdoor socket or a bathroom extractor fan.
  • A failed main switch or RCD inside the consumer unit. These wear out, especially in older boards.
  • A burnt or loose connection on the meter tails, the thick cables between your meter and fuse box.
  • Damaged cable after building work, a new kitchen or a fence post going in.

Lost power in just part of the house?

Power to one floor, the kitchen or the garage gone, but the rest of the house is fine? That usually points to a single circuit. It might be a tripped breaker, a burnt-out connection at a junction box, or a failed cable somewhere along the run. Our engineers test the circuit to find exactly where the fault is, so we don't have to lift floors on a guess.

What we can and can't touch

Your main fuse (the sealed unit where the supply cable enters your home) and your electricity meter belong to the network operator and your energy supplier. By law, we can't break the seals or work on them.

If our engineer finds the fault is on their equipment, we'll tell you straight away, explain what we found and help you report it, so you're not left wondering what to do next.

If someone in your home depends on electricity

If anyone in your home uses powered medical equipment, or is elderly or vulnerable, tell us when you call so we can prioritise your job. It's also worth joining UK Power Networks' free Priority Services Register, which gives extra support during network power cuts.

Why call ICE Electrical when the power's off?

  • With you within 60 minutes, 24 hours a day
  • Qualified, insured engineers from a NICEIC-approved contractor
  • Honest advice. If it's a network fault, we'll tell you before you spend anything
  • Fault traced and repaired, usually on the same visit
  • Written record of the work, and a certificate where one is required
