Electrical Fault Finding & Repairs

Lights that flicker for no reason. A socket that's quietly stopped working. An RCD that trips once a fortnight and nobody can work out why. Electrical faults aren't always dramatic, but they're always telling you something.

Signs you have an electrical fault

  • Lights flickering, dimming or buzzing
  • Sockets or switches that feel warm to the touch
  • Brown or black marks around a socket or plug
  • One or more sockets with no power
  • A circuit breaker or RCD that trips now and then
  • A faint burning smell you can't place
  • Appliances that keep failing on the same circuit
  • A tingle when you touch a metal fitting or appliance

Any one of these is worth checking. Two or more together means it should be looked at soon.

Why fault finding takes skill

Swapping a socket is easy. Finding out why it burnt out in the first place is the real job.

Our engineers isolate each circuit and test it with specialist equipment. Insulation resistance testing shows where cable insulation is breaking down, often long before anything visible goes wrong. Continuity and earth fault loop impedance tests confirm that protective devices will actually disconnect the supply if they need to.

The causes we find most often are:

  • Loose connections in a socket back box, light fitting or junction box, which heat up over time
  • Damaged cable, usually from a nail, screw or picture hook driven through a wall or floor
  • Water getting in at outdoor sockets, garden lighting, bathroom fans or through a leak upstairs
  • Rodent damage in lofts and under floors
  • A faulty appliance that's been blamed on the wiring

Electrical repairs we carry out

  • Replacing damaged or scorched sockets, switches and fused spurs
  • Repairing or replacing faulty light fittings
  • Repairing damaged cable and making safe exposed wiring
  • Remaking loose or burnt connections, including inside the consumer unit
  • Replacing faulty RCDs and circuit breakers
  • Repairing outdoor sockets, garden lighting and outbuilding supplies
  • Fixing faults on cooker, shower and immersion heater circuits

When a repair isn't the right answer

Sometimes the fault is a symptom of a bigger problem. An old fuse box with no RCD protection, or wiring with rubber or fabric insulation, can't be made reliable with repairs alone.

If that's what we find, we'll tell you plainly, show you what we've seen, and explain your options. There's no pressure. Our job is to make your installation safe today and give you an honest picture so you can plan.

Where an upgrade makes sense, see consumer unit replacement or rewiring.

Fault finding for landlords and businesses

Landlords and letting agents: report the fault and we'll contact the tenant to arrange access. You'll get a written report covering what we found, what we fixed and anything that needs attention later. That record helps if you're asked to show you've kept the property safe.

Businesses: intermittent faults cost time and stock. We can carry out fault finding outside trading hours, and our commercial emergency service is there if a fault takes out a critical circuit.
