Fire Alarm Installation
A fire alarm system has one job: give everyone in the building enough warning to get out safely. Getting that right depends on choosing the right category of system, putting detectors in the right places and installing it so it keeps working for years.
The right system for your building
ICE Electrical designs and installs fire alarm systems for offices, shops, restaurants, schools, warehouses, blocks of flats and HMOs across London and the South East. Every installation is carried out by NICEIC-approved engineers and handed over with full commissioning paperwork.

Choosing the right category of system
BS 5839-1, the code of practice for fire detection in non-domestic buildings, sets out categories of system based on what the alarm needs to protect.
- Category M: manual call points only, for small, low-risk buildings where people will spot a fire themselves
- Category L1 to L5: automatic detection designed to protect life. L1 covers the whole building; L2 to L4 focus on escape routes and higher-risk rooms; L5 is a bespoke design for a specific risk
- Category P1 and P2: detection designed to protect property, often required by insurers for unoccupied areas or high-value stock
Your fire risk assessment should guide the category. If it hasn't been specified, our survey will recommend one, explain why, and agree it with you before we quote.
For dwellings, including flats and many HMOs, the relevant standard is BS 5839-6, which uses grades and categories suited to residential layouts.
Conventional, addressable or wireless?
Conventional systems divide the building into zones. When a detector activates, the panel shows which zone, not which device. They suit smaller premises with simple layouts.
Addressable systems identify the exact device that has activated. In a large office or a block with long corridors, that saves vital minutes for the fire service and makes fault finding far quicker.
Wireless systems use radio links between devices and the panel. They're useful in listed buildings, occupied premises where disruption must be kept to a minimum, or temporary sites where running cable isn't practical.
We'll recommend the type that fits your building and budget, not the one with the biggest margin.
What a new installation includes
- Survey and system design, including detector and call point layout
- Supply and installation of the control panel, detectors, sounders, beacons and call points
- Fire-resistant cabling, installed and supported to BS 5839-1 requirements
- Interfaces to access control, door holders, lifts or plant where needed
- Commissioning, testing and a zone plan displayed beside the panel
- Handover training for your staff and a logbook ready for weekly tests
Upgrading an existing system
Older panels can become unreliable and hard to source parts for. If your system keeps throwing faults, or your building's use has changed since it was installed, an upgrade may make more sense than repeated repairs. We can often reuse existing cabling where it meets current standards, which keeps disruption and cost down.
Working in occupied buildings
Most of our fire alarm installations happen in buildings that stay open. We plan the work around your trading hours or residents' routines, keep existing protection live wherever possible, and agree temporary measures in writing if a section has to be disabled during the changeover.
Once the system is in, keep it compliant with fire alarm servicing, and check your escape routes are covered by emergency lighting.
