Emergency Lighting Installation, Testing & Certification

When the mains supply fails, emergency lighting is what lets people find their way out. Stairwells, corridors, exits and open areas all need to stay lit long enough for everyone to leave safely, and for that to happen, the system has to be designed correctly and tested regularly.

Where emergency lighting is needed

Emergency lighting covers more than the exit signs above the doors. A compliant design typically includes:

  • Escape route lighting along corridors, stairs and through the route to a final exit
  • Open area (anti-panic) lighting in larger rooms where people need to reach an escape route
  • High-risk task area lighting where a process needs to be shut down safely before leaving
  • Points of emphasis, such as changes of direction, stairs, fire alarm call points and firefighting equipment

Your fire risk assessment will identify the routes and areas that need cover. Our survey turns that into a lighting layout that meets BS 5266-1.

Maintained, non-maintained and self-test systems

Non-maintained fittings only light up when the mains fails. They're the most common choice for corridors, stairwells and offices.

Maintained fittings stay lit all the time and continue on battery during a power cut. They're typically used in places of entertainment, cinemas and venues where people may be unfamiliar with the building.

Self-test systems check themselves automatically and report faults, either on the fitting or to a central panel. They cut down the time needed for manual testing and are well suited to large or multi-site estates.

Testing requirements

BS 5266-1 sets out a clear testing routine:

  • Monthly: a short functional test, often called a flick test, to check every fitting switches to battery and lights
  • Annually: a full-duration test, usually three hours, to prove the batteries will last as long as the system is rated for
  • Records: every test logged, with faults noted and repaired

We can carry out both tests for you, or carry out the annual test and train your team to do the monthly checks. The annual test leaves fittings with drained batteries for up to 24 hours while they recharge, so we schedule it for times when the building is quiet.

Upgrading older systems

Older fittings with fluorescent tubes and nickel-cadmium batteries are often near the end of their life. Batteries fail duration tests and replacement parts become harder to find. Switching to LED fittings with modern batteries cuts maintenance and energy use, and is a good moment to review whether the coverage still matches the building's layout.

Part of your wider fire safety

Emergency lighting works alongside your fire alarm, signage and escape routes. We often test it on the same visit as fire alarm servicing, and if a fault is found during a power failure, our commercial emergency electricians can attend 24/7.

Why choose ICE Electrical for emergency lighting?
