Extra Sockets, Switches & Small Electrical Jobs

Every home has a list. The socket behind the sofa that's always got an extension lead coming out of it. The light switch on the wrong side of the door. The cooker that needs connecting before the new kitchen can be used. Small jobs, but the kind that never seem to get done because it's hard to find an electrician who'll come out for them.

FAQs

Pricing & Payment

Is it worth booking an electrician for just one socket?

Yes, if you need it. But if you have other small jobs, adding them to the same visit is usually far better value than separate call-outs. Send us everything on your list and we'll price it as one job. There's no minimum job size.

Booking & Response Times

How quickly can you fit extra sockets?

Small jobs can usually be booked in within a few days, depending on your area and how much is on the list. Most single socket additions take an hour or two once our electrician is on site. A longer list may take a full day.

The Work Itself

Can you connect a new electric cooker or hob?

Yes. We check the existing cooker circuit is suitable for the new appliance's power rating and connect it safely. If the appliance needs a larger circuit than you have, we'll explain the options and price the upgrade. We'll need the appliance's model number or power rating in advance.

Can you replace my normal sockets with USB sockets?

Yes. USB sockets fit the same back boxes as standard sockets in most cases, so swapping them over is quick. We'll recommend good-quality units, as cheap USB sockets can overheat when charging several devices. USB-C sockets with fast charging are now widely available.

Can you add a socket anywhere I want?

In most places, yes. Our electrician checks the nearest circuit can handle the extra load, that the cable route is safe and that the position meets the regulations, such as keeping sockets away from sinks and baths. If a position isn't suitable, we'll suggest the nearest one that is.

Regulations & Compliance

Can sockets be fitted in a bathroom?

Standard sockets must be at least three metres from the edge of a bath or shower tray, which rules them out in most UK bathrooms. Shaver sockets are allowed in suitable positions. We'll advise on what's possible in your room.

Do I need a qualified electrician to add a socket?

Adding a socket isn't notifiable in most rooms, but it still needs to be done safely and tested to BS 7671. A NICEIC-approved electrician checks the circuit can take the extra load and issues a certificate for the work. That certificate is useful evidence when you come to sell.

Certificates & Paperwork

Do I get a certificate for small electrical jobs?

Yes. Adding to or altering an existing circuit is recorded on a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. Any new circuit gets an Electrical Installation Certificate, with building control notified where required. However small the job, you'll have a record of what was done and the test results, sent to you by email.

Guarantees & Aftercare

Can you match my existing sockets and switches?

Usually, yes. Tell us the finish you have, such as white plastic, brushed steel or black nickel, and we'll source matching accessories. Photos of your current sockets help us get it right. If you'd like to change the finish throughout a room, we can price that too.

What if a new socket stops working?

Get in touch. A new socket should work without problems, so if it doesn't, we'll come back, test it and find out whether it's the accessory, the connection or something elsewhere on the circuit. It's rare, but we'd rather know about it.

Saving up a list makes sense

If you've got several small jobs, it's worth giving them to us in one go. One visit for six jobs is usually far better value than six separate call-outs, and our electrician can plan the work so the power is off for as little time as possible. Write down everything you'd like doing, and we'll give you a fixed price for the lot.

Extension leads aren't a long-term answer

If you're relying on extension leads and adaptors, it's a sign you need more sockets. Daisy-chained leads and overloaded adaptors are a common cause of house fires, especially when they're used for heaters, kettles or tumble dryers. Adding a socket is a quick job, and far safer.

Is the circuit up to it?

Adding a socket isn't just a case of connecting a new one to the nearest cable. Our electrician checks that the existing circuit can handle the extra load, that it's protected by an RCD, and that the cable route won't put the new socket at risk of damage. If the circuit isn't suitable, we'll explain why and suggest a better option, such as a new circuit from the consumer unit.

Certificates for small jobs

Small doesn't mean unregulated. Adding a socket to an existing circuit is recorded on a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. A new circuit, such as a new cooker supply, or any new work in a bathroom, is notifiable under Part P, and we notify building control for you. Either way, you'll have the paperwork for your records or a future sale.

Bigger plans?

If your list is getting long, or you're redoing a whole room, it may be worth talking about a partial rewire. If your fuse box is old or has no spare capacity, a consumer unit replacement may need to come first. Thinking about smart switches or lighting? See smart home installation.
