Outdoor & Security Lighting Installation

Outdoor lighting does two jobs. It makes your garden somewhere you can actually use after dark, and it makes your home a harder target for anyone who shouldn't be there. Done badly, it also means tripping RCDs every time it rains.

FAQs

Pricing & Payment

What affects the cost of outdoor lighting installation?

The number of lights, the distance from the house, whether cables need to be buried or run in conduit, and the type of fittings. Ground-recessed lights and long cable runs take more work. We'll give you a fixed price after seeing the space.

Booking & Response Times

What's the best time of year to install garden lighting?

Any time of year works, but spring and autumn are ideal because the ground is easier to dig than in summer or deep winter. If you're having landscaping done, involve us early so cables go in before paving or turf.

The Work Itself

What IP rating do outdoor lights need?

It depends on exposure. A wall light under a porch might need IP44, while lights exposed to driving rain need IP65 or higher. Ground-recessed lights that may sit in water need IP67. We check this for every fitting. Using the wrong rating is the most common reason outdoor lights fail and trip.

How do I stop my security light coming on all the time?

Sensor position and sensitivity are the key. We aim PIR sensors at the areas that matter, such as the door and drive, and adjust sensitivity and timers so passing cats and swaying branches don't trigger them constantly. We'll also angle fittings so they don't shine into neighbours' windows.

Do outdoor light cables have to be buried?

Cables need protecting from damage. That usually means armoured cable buried at a safe depth, or cable run in suitable conduit along walls and fences. We'll choose the right method for each part of the garden. We'll mark or record the routes so you know where they run before you dig.

Regulations & Compliance

Do outdoor circuits need RCD protection?

Yes. BS 7671 requires RCD protection for outdoor circuits and sockets that could be used with equipment outdoors. It cuts the power quickly if water gets in or a cable is damaged, which protects anyone in the garden. We test the RCD on completion to prove it disconnects in time.

Is outdoor electrical work covered by Part P?

Yes. A new outdoor circuit is notifiable under Part P. As a NICEIC-approved contractor, we notify building control for you. Extending an existing circuit outdoors isn't notifiable but is still certified. You'll receive a compliance certificate once the new circuit has been notified.

Certificates & Paperwork

Will I get a certificate for my garden lighting?

Yes. A new outdoor circuit gets an Electrical Installation Certificate and building control notification. Work on an existing circuit is recorded on a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. Both include test results showing the circuit is safe, and you'll receive copies by email for your records.

Guarantees & Aftercare

Can you add an outdoor socket at the same time?

Yes, and it's often worth doing. An outdoor socket on the same RCD-protected circuit gives you power for garden tools, pressure washers and seasonal lighting without trailing leads from the house. Weatherproof, lockable sockets keep the outlet safe when it isn't in use.

What if my outdoor lights start tripping after heavy rain?

Let us know straight away. It usually means water has found its way into a fitting or junction box. We'll test the circuit, find the source and seal or replace the affected part. Fittings with the wrong IP rating are the usual culprit, and we'll replace them with properly rated ones.

Built for the British weather

Water and electricity are the main reason outdoor installations fail. Every fitting we install outdoors has the right IP (ingress protection) rating for where it sits. A wall light under a porch needs less protection than a light set into a lawn that sits in standing water every winter.

Cables are either armoured and buried at the right depth, or run in suitable conduit, so they won't be damaged by a spade or lawn edger. Junction boxes are kept to a minimum and sealed properly. Outdoor circuits are protected by an RCD, so if water does get in, the power cuts off before anyone can get a shock.

Security lighting that actually helps

A floodlight that comes on every time a cat walks past soon gets ignored by you and your neighbours. We position PIR sensors to cover the areas that matter, such as the front door, side gate and driveway, and set the sensitivity and timer so the light does its job without becoming a nuisance.

We'll also think about glare. A light angled into a neighbour's bedroom window causes problems you don't need. Downward-facing fittings keep the light where you want it.

Regulations for outdoor electrical work

Adding a new outdoor circuit is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NICEIC-approved contractor, we notify building control for you, and you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate for the new circuit. If we're extending an existing circuit instead, you'll get a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate.

Already have outdoor lights that trip?

If your existing garden lights keep tripping the RCD when it rains, water is almost certainly getting in somewhere. Our tripping electrics service finds the fault and fixes it, and we can replace failing fittings with properly rated ones.

Planning a garden office or workshop? A properly designed outdoor supply is the starting point. Our sockets & small jobs team can also add outdoor sockets on their own.
