Home EV Charger Installation
Plugging your car into a three-pin socket every night works, just about. It's slow, it puts a sustained load on a socket that wasn't designed for it, and a trailing lead out of a window isn't anyone's idea of a long-term plan.
Ditch the three-pin plug
A home EV charger fixes all of that. ICE Electrical fits smart chargers on driveways, garage walls and carports across London and the South East, with every installation carried out by a NICEIC-approved electrician.

Our home ev chargers treatment process
Step 1 Contact
Book a survey online or call us. Tell us your car, where you'd like the charger and send a photo of your consumer unit if you can.
Step 2 The Quote
We check your main fuse, consumer unit, earthing and cable route, then confirm a fixed price for the charger and installation before you commit.
Step 3 The Works
On the day, usually around half a day, we fit the dedicated circuit and charger, connect it to your Wi-Fi and app, and keep the power-off time short.
Step 4 After care
We test the circuit to BS 7671 Section 722, issue your Electrical Installation Certificate, notify the network operator and show you how to use the app.

What a home charger gives you
- Faster charging. A typical 7kW charger is around three times quicker than a domestic socket, so most cars are full by morning.
- Cheaper miles. Schedule charging for overnight off-peak hours using the charger's app.
- A safer setup. A dedicated circuit with the right protection, instead of a heavy load on an ordinary socket.
- A neater driveway. A fixed unit with the cable stored on the wall or in the charger itself.
Choosing the right charger
There's no single best charger, only the one that suits your car, your drive and how you use it. We'll talk you through the choices before you commit.
Tethered or untethered. A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached, so you just unhook and plug in. An untethered charger has a socket, and you use your own cable. Tethered is more convenient; untethered looks tidier and works with any car.
Charging speed. Most homes have a single-phase supply, which means 7kW is the practical maximum. Some properties have three-phase, which allows 11kW or 22kW, but only if your car can accept it.
App and tariffs. If you're on, or thinking about, an EV tariff with cheap overnight rates, check the charger works with it. We install leading charger brands and can explain the differences in plain terms.
Solar compatibility. Got solar panels, or planning them? Some chargers can top up your car from surplus solar power during the day.
What we check before fitting
This is the part that separates a good installation from a problem waiting to happen.
- Main fuse and supply. We check your incoming fuse rating and what else uses power in the house. If an electric shower, oven and charger could all run at once, we may fit a charger with load management that slows charging automatically.
- Consumer unit. The charger needs its own circuit with suitable protection. If your board is full or dated, we'll tell you, and you may need a consumer unit replacement first.
- Earthing. Most homes in the area have a PME supply. Under BS 7671 Section 722, that can mean installing an earth rod or choosing a charger with built-in open-PEN protection.
- Where you park. We plan the cable route and charger position so the lead reaches your charge port comfortably, without trailing across the drive.
What happens on installation day
Most home installations take around half a day. Your power will be off for a short spell while we connect the new circuit to your consumer unit, and we'll agree when that happens so it doesn't catch you mid-wash or mid-meeting.
We drill, clip and seal cable runs neatly, set up the charger, connect it to your Wi-Fi and app, and test everything before showing you how it works. We also notify the network operator on your behalf.
Living in a flat, or no off-street parking?
Charging at home is harder without a driveway, but not always impossible. If you have an allocated space in a private car park, the freeholder or managing agent may agree to a charger. We're happy to survey and explain what's needed. For larger shared car parks, see commercial and workplace EV charging.
