Lightning Protection & Earthing
A lightning strike can damage a building's structure, start a fire, and send a surge through the electrical installation that destroys IT equipment, controls and plant. Lightning protection and good earthing reduce those risks, but only if the system is designed properly and inspected regularly.
Protection that works when it's needed
ICE Electrical designs, installs, inspects and repairs lightning protection, earthing and surge protection for commercial buildings across London and the South East, working to BS EN 62305 and BS 7671.

Our lightning protection & earthing treatment process
Step 1 Contact
Book an inspection or call 03335775805. Tell us about the building, any existing lightning protection and when the system was last tested.
Step 2 The Quote
We carry out the risk assessment or survey, then send a fixed price for the design, installation, repairs or inspection programme that's required.
Step 3 The Works
Engineers install or repair air terminations, down conductors, earthing and surge protection, or inspect and test every point of an existing system.
Step 4 After care
You receive a report with test readings, defects ranked by priority, and certification for any installation or repair work we've carried out.

Does your building need lightning protection?
Not every building does. BS EN 62305 sets out a risk assessment that looks at the building's size, height, location, construction, what happens inside it and what would be lost if it were struck. Taller buildings, isolated sites, buildings full of people and those housing important equipment are more likely to need a system.
We carry out that risk assessment and give you a clear answer, backed by the calculation. If protection is needed, the assessment also sets the level of protection the design should meet.
What we install
- Air terminations on roofs and high points to intercept a strike
- Down conductors that carry the current safely to ground
- Earth termination systems, including earth rods and earth mats
- Test clamps so each down conductor can be tested individually
- Equipotential bonding to connect metalwork and services to the protection system
- Surge protection devices (SPDs) at the main intake and on sensitive circuits
Inspection and testing of existing systems
Once installed, a lightning protection system needs regular inspection and testing to show it still works. Annual inspection is typical for many commercial buildings, with more frequent checks where the risk is higher or the environment is harsh.
Our inspection covers the condition of conductors, fixings and joints, continuity through the system, and earth resistance testing at each test point. Roof work, building alterations and theft of copper tape are common reasons systems stop working without anyone noticing. You'll receive a report with test readings and any defects, prioritised so you can plan repairs.
Earthing and bonding
Lightning protection and the electrical installation's own earthing have to work together. We test earth electrodes, check main protective bonding to gas, water and other services, and confirm that earthing arrangements are adequate for the installation. Poor earthing can stop protective devices disconnecting a fault quickly, which makes it a safety issue every day, not just in a storm.
Earthing checks also form part of commercial EICR and fixed wire testing.
Surge protection for sensitive equipment
Surges don't only come from direct strikes. A strike nearby, or switching on the local network, can send a damaging voltage spike through incoming supplies and data lines. Surge protection devices fitted at the right points in the installation help protect servers, building management systems, fire alarm panels and access control. We'll recommend where SPDs are needed and how they should be coordinated.
Why choose ICE Electrical for lightning protection?
- Risk assessments to BS EN 62305, so you only install what the building needs
- Design, installation, testing and repairs from one contractor
- Earthing, bonding and surge protection reviewed alongside the lightning system
- Clear inspection reports with readings and prioritised defects
- NICEIC-approved electrical contractor working to BS 7671
